Wellington - “the coolest little capital in the world”
Lonely Planet dubbed the world's southernmost capital city with its proud title over 10 years ago. We’ve grown into that crown in the subsequent decade to make it fit like a glove.
With its compact nature and over 50,000 hectares of forests and regional parks on its doorstep, as well as a bustling creative and cultural heart, Wellington is a city which punches above its weight.
As well as being the home of central government Wellington has the national museum Te Papa Tongarewa, award-winning eateries (and more than 400 cafes and eateries, rivalling New York on a per person basis), a coffee culture, regional wine and craft beer and a jam-packed events calendar.
The city's waterfront is fully-pedestrianised, and only a short distance from downtown is Zealandia, the first fully-fenced eco-sanctuary in the world near the heart of city.
Wellington usually rates highly in global liveability rankings, and has a serious range of options for both work and play.
With its many cultural attractions – museums, galleries and open spaces – as well as a party vibe when the sun sets, it's no wonder Wellington wears its Coolest Little Capital in the World title with pride.
